When you want a blanket this week, go chunky. Super bulky yarn with a 10 mm hook makes stitches as big as your thumb, and a throw that would take forty hours in worsted takes about fifteen. It's also the coziest texture there is.

Gauge and sizes

Gauge: 7 hdc and 5 rows = 4 in (10 cm) with a 10 mm hook.

Throw50 × 60 in908875

The pattern

  1. Row 1: Ch 54 (90). Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Ch 2 (doesn't count), turn. (52 / 88)
  2. Rows 2–45 (75): Hdc across. Ch 2, turn.
  3. Border: Ch 1, sc evenly around (1 sc per row end along the sides, 3 sc in each corner). Join and fasten off.

That's genuinely it — with stitches this size, simple is best. Textured stitches get lost in chunky yarn.

Working with chunky and chenille yarns

  • Chenille "blanket yarns" are velvety and super soft but hide stitches — count carefully and use markers.
  • Chenille can "worm" (loops pop out) if stitches are loose. Use a smaller hook than you'd think, and keep even tension.
  • Joins: chunky yarn shows knots. Join new balls by weaving both ends into stitches, or splice wool yarn by felting.
  • Weight: a chunky throw is heavy. Rest it on your lap as it grows, not hanging from your hands.

Make it your own

  • Colour block: three wide bands of cream, sage and terracotta.
  • Pom-pom edge: sew pom-poms along the short ends.
  • Even faster: jumbo (#7) yarn with a 15 mm hook — about 4 stitches per 4 in.
  • Matching pillow: see our pillow cover.

Common questions

How many skeins do I need for a chunky crochet blanket?

About 1,400 yd of super bulky yarn for a 50 × 60 in throw. Divide by the yardage on your label — chunky skeins vary a lot, from about 50 to 220 yd.

Can I crochet a chunky blanket with my hands?

Hand crochet with jumbo yarn is possible, but a hook gives much more even stitches and a sturdier blanket.

Is chunky yarn good for baby blankets?

Choose a soft, machine-washable acrylic or chenille, and avoid very loose stitches that tiny fingers could catch.

Curling up under a chunky blanket — best feeling in crochet. 🤍
