In this post
A crochet pillow cover is a quick way to change the look of a room, and the simplest version is just two panels joined around a pillow form. The trick to a plump pillow is to make the cover about 1 in smaller than the form, so the cover stretches snugly instead of sagging.

The pattern
Panels (make 2)
- Row 1: Ch the number for your size. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Ch 2 (doesn't count), turn.
- Rows 2 onward: Hdc across. Ch 2, turn. Work the number of rows for your size, until the panel is square.
- Edging: Sc evenly around the panel, with 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off the first panel; keep the second on the hook.
Joining
- Step 1: Hold the panels wrong sides together.
- Step 2: Sc through both edges along three sides, working 3 sc in the corners.
- Step 3: Insert the pillow form, pushing it into the corners.
- Step 4: Sc along the fourth side to close. Fasten off and hide the tail inside.
For a removable cover, join only three sides and add 4 buttons with ch-4 loops on the fourth.
Other front panels
- Granny squares: four squares per side — see granny squares and joining.
- Waffle stitch: extra texture — see the waffle stitch.
- Mosaic: bold geometry — see mosaic crochet.
- Chunky: super bulky yarn to match a chunky blanket.
Common questions
Why should the cover be smaller than the pillow?
Crochet stretches. A cover 1 in smaller than the form fits snugly and looks plump; an exact-size cover looks baggy.
Can I wash a crochet pillow cover?
If it's removable, yes — follow the yarn label. Acrylic and cotton covers can usually be machine washed gently.
How much yarn does a 16-inch pillow cover need?
About 420 yd of worsted yarn in hdc.
