A crochet plant hanger is the boho decor piece that takes an evening and looks great for years. This one has a solid round base for the pot to sit on, a mesh round that cradles it, and four long straps that come together at a ring for hanging.

Use cotton — it's strong, doesn't stretch much and won't sag under the weight of damp soil. Holding two strands of worsted cotton together makes a sturdy cord.

The pattern

Ch 2 at the start of each round doesn't count as a stitch.

Base

  1. Rnd 1: 12 dc in a magic ring. Sl st to the first dc. (12)
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st. Join. (24)
  3. Rnd 3: Ch 2, (dc, 2 dc in next) 12 times. Join. (36)
  4. Rnd 4: Ch 2, in back loops only, dc around. Join. This turns the edge up. (36)

Mesh cradle

  1. Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in the first st. *Ch 5, skip 2, sc in the next st*; repeat around, ending ch 5, sl st to the first sc. (12 loops)
  2. Rnd 6: Sl st to the centre of the first loop. *Ch 6, sc in the centre of the next loop*; repeat around. (12 loops)

Straps (make 4)

  1. Step 1: Join yarn in the centre of any loop of Rnd 6. Ch 70 (about 24 in).
  2. Step 2: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and back down the chain to the loop. Sl st into the loop and fasten off. A row of sc makes the strap thick and strong.
  3. Step 3: Skip 2 loops and repeat in the next loop, so the four straps are evenly spaced around the hanger.

Ring

  1. Step 1: Gather the four strap ends, check the hanger hangs level, and thread them through the ring.
  2. Step 2: Fold each end over the ring by 1 in and sew it securely to itself.
  3. Step 3: Optional: cover the ring with sc worked around it before attaching, for a fully crocheted look.

Make it your own

  • Bigger pots: add an increase round (48 sts) for 6-in pots and work 16 loops.
  • Tassel: knot a big tassel under the base.
  • Beads: slide wooden beads onto the straps before gathering.
  • Matching basket: see our crochet basket.

Common questions

What yarn is best for a crochet plant hanger?

Cotton cord or cotton yarn held double. Avoid acrylic and wool, which stretch under weight.

How much weight can it hold?

A cotton hanger like this holds a 4–5 in pot with a plant comfortably. For heavy ceramic pots, use thicker cord and a sturdy ceiling hook.

Can I use it outdoors?

Under cover, yes. Cotton will eventually weaken in sun and rain; outdoor (polyester) cord lasts longer outside.
