A handmade bookmark is the perfect small gift for readers, teachers and book clubs — and it takes about twenty minutes. Cotton keeps it thin and flat enough to close inside a book, and the alternating rows of single and double crochet give it a pretty, textured stripe.

Toppers

  • Corner heart: make a flat heart from our heart pattern and sew it to one top corner, so it peeks over the top of the page.
  • Tassel: wrap yarn 20 times around a 3-in card, tie the top, cut the bottom, wrap the neck, and attach it with a ch-10 cord.
  • Flower: an easy crochet flower on the top edge.
  • Seasonal: a mini pumpkin, star or snowflake.

Common questions

What yarn is best for a crochet bookmark?

Thin, smooth cotton (DK, sport or crochet thread) so it lies flat and doesn't damage the book's spine.

How do I keep a bookmark flat?

Block it: wet it, pin it flat and let it dry. A little spray starch keeps it crisp.

Can I make it in thread?

Yes — size 10 thread with a 1.75 mm hook makes a delicate, very thin bookmark. Chain about 15 to keep the same width. See our thread guide.
