The flat heart below is the most useful five minutes in crochet. Every stitch goes into a single magic ring, and when you pull the ring closed the stitches snap into a heart shape. Make one for a card, fifty for a garland, or sew one on anything that needs love.

The puffy heart is a stuffed version for keychains, pocket hugs and Valentine's gifts.

The pattern

Flat heart (one magic ring)

  1. Step 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3.
  2. Step 2: Into the ring work: 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr.
  3. Step 3: Ch 3 and sl st into the ring.
  4. Step 4: Pull the tail firmly to close the ring — the dip at the top and the point at the bottom form as it closes. Fasten off.

The single tr between two ch-1s is the point of the heart. Pull it gently downward while you weave in the ends to sharpen it.

What to make with crochet hearts

  • Garland: 20 flat hearts on a chain, alternating red, pink and white.
  • Valentine cards: glue a flat heart to the front of a card.
  • Pocket hug: a puffy heart in a little bag with a note.
  • Keychain: add a split ring as in our keychain patterns.
  • Bouquet filler: hearts on wire stems tucked into a crochet bouquet.

Common questions

Why doesn't my heart have a point?

The point comes from the single tr between the two ch-1s. Make sure you work it, and pull it downward before weaving in ends. A firmly closed ring helps too.

How do I make a bigger flat heart?

Use bulky yarn and a 6 mm hook, or work a round of sc around the finished heart with (sc, ch 1, sc) at the bottom point.

What yarn is best for hearts?

Cotton gives crisp, flat hearts for garlands; acrylic or velvet yarn is softer for puffy hearts.
