Napkin rings are the Thanksgiving project that makes the whole table look planned. Each one is a small ribbed band — single crochet through the back loops — seamed into a ring. Cotton is the yarn to use: it's firm, washable and doesn't shed onto the napkins.

The pattern

  1. Row 1: Ch 8. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Ch 1, turn. (7)
  2. Rows 2–26: Sc in the back loop only of each st across. Ch 1, turn. (7)
  3. Check the fit: wrap the strip around a rolled napkin. It should overlap by about ¼ inch; add or remove rows if needed.
  4. Seam: Hold the first and last rows together and sl st through both. Fasten off and turn right side out so the seam is hidden inside.
  5. Edging (optional): Join at the seam and work sc evenly around each edge for a neater finish.

Decorations

  • Leaf: the small leaf from our fall leaves pattern in rust or gold, sewn over the seam.
  • Acorn: one crochet acorn with a stem — the most popular choice for rustic tables.
  • Mini pumpkin: the small pumpkin worked over ch 9 and 20 rows.
  • Christmas swap: a red berry cluster and green leaf turns the same rings into holiday decor.

Common questions

How long should a napkin ring be?

Most napkin rings are 1½–2 inches across, which needs a strip about 5½–6 inches long before seaming. Test on your own napkins — thick linen needs a longer strip.

Can I use acrylic?

Yes, but cotton holds its shape better and survives a hot wash after gravy accidents.

How many can I make from one ball?

A standard 120 yd ball of worsted cotton makes about 10 plain rings.
