This turkey is a ball with a personality: a round brown body, a tiny gold beak, a red wattle and a fan of five feathers that makes it instantly recognisable. It takes an afternoon and sits happily on a plate, a shelf or a place card.

The feathers are worked flat from a short chain, so they're quick — and a great way to use up autumn-coloured scraps.

Tail feathers (make 5: 2 orange, 2 yellow, 1 red)

  1. Row 1: Ch 9. Working into the chain from the 2nd ch from the hook: sl st, sc, hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, 3 sc in the last ch.
  2. Row 1, other side: Continue along the other side of the chain: hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. Fasten off with a tail.
  3. Assemble: Lay the feathers in a fan — red in the middle, yellow either side, orange outside — overlapping by half. Stitch them together at the base.
  4. Attach: Sew the fan to the back of the body so it stands up behind the head.

Wings (make 2, brown)

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
  3. Finish: Fold in half and sew one to each side of the body.

Make it your own

  • Place-card holders: tuck a small name card into the tail feathers at each place setting.
  • Pilgrim hat: a black flat circle with a short tube and a gold buckle stitch.
  • Turkey trio: make three in brown, cream and grey for a mantel display next to a pumpkin.
  • Kids' craft: skip the safety eyes and embroider them for little hands.

Common questions

How long does it take to crochet a turkey?

About 2½ hours: an hour for the body, an hour for the five feathers and the rest for assembly.

How do I make the tail stand up?

Sew the fan along the whole base, not just one point, and add a second line of stitches about ½ inch higher. For a very upright tail, slip a piece of cardboard behind it.

Can I make a bigger turkey?

Use bulky yarn and a 5 mm hook for a turkey about 5½ inches tall with the same stitch counts.
