Acorns are the fall equivalent of pom-poms: small, addictive and better by the dozen. Each one is two pieces — a stuffed oval nut and a slightly wider cap — and takes about twenty minutes.

They're also the best way to use the small balls of brown, tan and gold yarn that every crocheter seems to collect.

The pattern

Nut (tan)

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: (Sc, inc) 6 times. (18)
  4. Rnds 4–7: Sc around. (18)
  5. Rnd 8: (Sc, dec) 6 times. Stuff firmly. (12)
  6. Rnd 9: Dec 6 times. Fasten off and close. (6)

The magic-ring end is the pointed bottom of the acorn; the closed end goes under the cap.

Cap (brown)

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: (Sc, inc) 6 times. (18)
  4. Rnd 4: (5 sc, inc) 3 times. (21)
  5. Rnd 5: Sc around. Fasten off with a long tail. (21)
  6. Stem: Join brown at the centre of the cap, ch 4, sl st back down the chain. Fasten off.
  7. Assemble: Place the cap over the closed end of the nut and whipstitch around the cap edge.

Textured cap (optional)

For a bumpy cap like a real acorn, work Rnd 5 as (sc, bobble) around — a bobble is 3 unfinished dc in the same stitch, closed together. The bobbles pop to the outside.

Make it your own

  • Garland: string 15 acorns on jute twine with a few crochet leaves.
  • Earrings: crochet cotton thread and a 1.75 mm hook make ½-inch acorns. Add earring hooks through the stem.
  • Squirrel stash: a pile of acorns next to our mushrooms is the coziest shelf in the house.
  • Thanksgiving napkin rings: sew one to each of our napkin rings.

Common questions

How much yarn does a crochet acorn use?

About 8 yards of each colour, so a single 100 g skein of each will make dozens.

My cap doesn't fit. What do I do?

If it's too tight, add one more increase round; if it's floppy, skip Rnd 4. Caps should hug the top third of the nut.

Can I use these as cat toys?

Yes, without any glued or small hard parts. Add a pinch of dried catnip to the stuffing.
