The crochet bucket hat is a wardrobe staple for festivals, beach days and Australian summers. It's built in three simple parts, all in one piece of single crochet: a flat circle for the crown, straight rounds for the sides, and increase rounds that flare out into the brim. Cotton keeps it structured and cool.

Gauge and sizes

Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rounds = 4 in (10 cm). The first number is S/M, the second L.

The pattern

Work in continuous spiral rounds with a stitch marker.

Crown

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: (Sc, inc) 6 times. (18)
  4. Rnds 4–14 (15): Continue increasing 6 sts per round, with one more sc between increases each round: (2 sc, inc), (3 sc, inc), and so on. Stagger the increases on alternate rounds to keep the circle round. (84 / 90)

Sides

  1. Next rnd: In back loops only, sc around. This makes the crisp edge between crown and sides. (84 / 90)
  2. Next 15 rnds: Sc around. The sides should measure about 3½ in. Try it on — the bottom edge should sit just above your eyebrows. (84 / 90)

Brim

  1. S/M brim: (6 sc, inc) 12 times (96); sc around; (7 sc, inc) 12 times (108); sc around; (8 sc, inc) 12 times (120); sc around twice.
  2. L brim: (8 sc, inc) 10 times (100); sc around; (9 sc, inc) 10 times (110); sc around; (10 sc, inc) 10 times (120); sc around twice.
  3. Edge: Sl st around, then fasten off with an invisible join.

Make it your own

  • Granny square bucket hat: make the sides from 5 granny squares joined in a ring.
  • Stripes: alternate two colours every 3 rounds on the sides.
  • Floppy brim: add two more increase rounds; stiff brim: go down a hook size for the brim.
  • Flower: sew on an easy crochet flower.

Common questions

How do I make the bucket hat smaller or bigger?

Stop or continue the crown increases. Each round adds 6 stitches (about 1½ in of circumference). Measure your head and aim for 0–1 in less than your head size.

Why is my brim floppy?

Cotton holds a brim best. Use a smaller hook for the brim, starch it, or crochet the last round over a strand of plastic craft cord.

Can I use acrylic?

Yes, but it's warmer and softer — the hat will slouch more. Cotton blends are the best balance.
