In this post
Stars are the most versatile Christmas motif — ornament, garland, gift topper, tree topper — and the flat version takes about ten minutes. The first round is a ring of half double crochet; the second builds five chain-based points, each anchored with a slip stitch.

The pattern
Flat star
- Rnd 1: Ch 2 (doesn't count as a st), 10 hdc in a magic ring. Sl st to the first hdc. (10)
- Rnd 2: *Ch 5, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, dc in the last ch, skip the next hdc of Rnd 1, sl st in the following hdc*; repeat 4 more times, working the last sl st into the joining st. Fasten off. (5 points)
Each point uses two stitches of Rnd 1: one skipped, one slip-stitched into. Five points × two stitches = ten.
Puffy star (tree topper)
- Step 1: Make two flat stars in bulky yarn with a 5.5 mm hook (about 5 in across).
- Step 2: Hold them together, points matching. Join with sc through both layers around the edge, working 3 sc at each tip and a dec at each inner corner.
- Step 3: Stuff before closing the last point.
- Tree mount: Crochet a tube of 12 sc around for 3 in and sew it to the back so it slides over the top branch.
What to make with crochet stars
- Garland: ten gold stars on a long chain — or alternate with candy canes.
- Ornaments: stiffen flat stars and hang with gold thread.
- Baby mobile: white and grey puffy stars with clouds (no small parts within reach).
- Mini tree topper: sew one to our crochet Christmas tree.
Common questions
Why are my star points floppy?
Pull the slip stitch between points snug, use cotton for crisper points, or stiffen with starch. A smaller hook also helps.
How do I make a bigger star?
Use bulky yarn, or lengthen each point: ch 7, then sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr down the chain.
Can I make a six-point star?
Yes — work 12 hdc in Rnd 1 and repeat the point 6 times.
