Crochet Christmas Wreath: A Mini Ornament and a Door-Sized Version

The secret to a quick crochet wreath is that you don't crochet the shape — you crochet over a ring. Single crochet stitches worked around a plastic ring cover it completely, giving you a perfect circle to decorate with holly leaves and berries.

For a door wreath, the same idea scales up with a foam form and a wrap of green fabric.

The rest of this post is just below — free, as always.

The pattern

Mini wreath base (3-in ring)

  1. Step 1: Make a slipknot on your hook. Hold the ring and the yarn tail together.
  2. Step 2: Insert the hook through the ring, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops — one sc around the ring.
  3. Step 3: Keep working sc around the ring, pushing stitches together so no plastic shows (about 60 sc for a 3-in ring). Sl st to the first sc.
  4. Step 4: Ch 12 for a hanging loop and sl st back into the same st. Fasten off.

Holly leaves (green, make 6 for the mini)

  1. Row 1: Ch 8. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: sl st, sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in the next ch, sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in the next ch, sc, 3 sc in the last ch.
  2. Other side: Mirror the first side: sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc), sc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc), sc, sl st. The ch-1s make the spiky holly points. Fasten off.

Berries (red, make 5)

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Sc around. Stuff with the yarn tail and close. (6)

Door wreath (12-in form)

  1. Cover: Ch 21 and work rows of sc (20 sts) in green until the strip wraps all the way around the form (about 38 in for a 12-in form). Wrap it around the form and whipstitch the long edges together on the back.
  2. Leaves: Make about 30 holly leaves at double size (ch 14, with three hdc points per side).
  3. Berries: Make 20 berries, or use red pom-poms.
  4. Bow: Make a large version of our crochet bow with chunky red yarn.

Assembly

Sew the leaves around the ring in pairs, all pointing the same direction, overlapping slightly. Tuck berries in clusters of three between the leaves. Finish the mini with a small red bow at the top or bottom.

Common questions

What can I use as a wreath ring?

Plastic bangles, canning-jar lid rings, macramé rings or embroidery hoops (inner ring) all work. Metal rings can rust if they get wet.

Can I hang the door wreath outside?

Under a covered porch, yes — use acrylic yarn. Rain will make cotton sag and can stain the door.

How many leaves do I need?

About two leaves per inch of ring circumference for full coverage — 6–8 for a 3-in ornament and 30–40 for a 12-in door wreath.
