The mini Christmas sweater is a little jumper you can hold in your palm: a front, a back, two sleeves and a ribbed hem, decorated afterwards with cross stitch. Hang it on the tree, on a tiny hanger, or tie it on a gift — it's the ornament people beg for.

The decoration is added at the end with cross stitch over single crochet, which is much easier than colourwork while you crochet. Each sc looks like a small square, perfect for a stitch chart.

Assembly

  1. Shoulders: Place front and back together. Sew 3 sts at each end of the top edge, leaving 4 sts open for the neck.
  2. Sides: Sew the sides from the hem up to Row 8, leaving an armhole.
  3. Sleeves: Sew a sleeve tube into each armhole, rib end outward.
  4. Hanging loop: Ch 12 at the neck and sl st back.

Decorating with cross stitch

Treat each single crochet on the front as one square. Bring the needle up at one corner of a stitch, down at the opposite corner, then cross back. Try these:

  • Snowflake: a 5 × 5 "X" with a plus sign over it, centred on the front.
  • Tree: a green triangle 1 – 3 – 5 – 7 stitches wide, with a brown trunk.
  • Stripe band: a row of white crosses across Row 5 and Row 9 for a classic Fair Isle look.
  • Initial: a letter for a personalised gift ornament.

Common questions

Can I make a bigger sweater for a doll or teddy?

Yes. Measure the chest, multiply by your gauge (about 4 sc per inch in worsted) and use that for Row 1; add rows to the body and sleeves in proportion.

How do I keep the cross stitches neat?

Always cross in the same direction (bottom-left to top-right, then bottom-right to top-left), and don't pull too tight.

What's the best gift tag idea?

Stitch the year on the back — "2026" — and it becomes a keepsake ornament.
