Handmade ornaments are the crochet project people keep for decades. They're also small, which means you can make a dozen in a weekend and still have time to wrap presents. Here are three quick patterns written out in full, plus a list of eight more ornaments with their own free patterns.

All three use worsted yarn and a 3.5 mm hook — tight enough that stuffing never shows, even on a tree with lights behind it.

The rest of this post is just below — free, as always.

Common questions

What yarn is best for crochet ornaments?

Worsted-weight acrylic or cotton. Cotton gives crisp stitch definition; acrylic is lighter and less likely to make branches droop. Metallic blends add sparkle but are harder to see stitches in.

How do I make ornaments hold their shape?

Stuff balls firmly. For flat ornaments like snowflakes and stars, stiffen them with fabric stiffener or a sugar or starch solution and pin them flat to dry.

Are crochet ornaments good to sell?

Yes — they're one of the best-selling handmade items in November and December. Sets of three or six in matching colours sell better than singles.
