This little tree gets its branches from a neat trick: three of the rounds are worked through the back loops only, which leaves a ring of free front loops on the outside. After the cone is finished, you go back and work a ruffle into each of those rings — three tiers of branches with no sewing.

A circle of cardboard in the base makes it stand perfectly flat on a table or windowsill.

Ruffled branches

  1. Bottom tier: Hold the tree upside down. Join green to any free front loop from Rnd 14. *3 dc in the next front loop, sl st in the next*; repeat around. Fasten off.
  2. Middle tier: Repeat in the free front loops of Rnd 10.
  3. Top tier: Repeat in the free front loops of Rnd 6, using hdc instead of dc for a smaller ruffle.

Star (gold)

  1. Step 1: Ch 2, 10 hdc in a magic ring, join. (10)
  2. Step 2: *Ch 3, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next ch, skip 1 st, sl st in the next st*; repeat 4 more times. (5 points)
  3. Attach: Sew to the very top of the tree.

Decorating

  • Ornaments: French knots in red, white and blue scattered over the ruffles.
  • Pom-pom balls: tiny ready-made pom-poms glued on look like baubles.
  • Garland: a strand of gold yarn wound around from top to bottom.
  • A forest: make three in different greens — and one white "snowy" tree.

Common questions

Why won't my tree stand up straight?

The base needs to be flat and the filling firm. Use the cardboard circle, stuff the cone right to the tip, and press the base on a table as you close it.

Can I make a taller tree?

Add a plain round after each increase round. That gives a slimmer, taller tree about 7 inches high with the same base.

Can I skip the ruffles?

Yes — work every round through both loops and decorate the smooth cone with French knot ornaments instead. It looks like a modern felt tree.

Where's your tree going — the table, the desk or the windowsill? 🎄
