Choosing yarn for bags

  • Cotton or cotton cord: strong, structured, washable — the best all-round bag yarn. See our cotton yarn guide.
  • Raffia or paper yarn: stiff, summery, beach-ready.
  • T-shirt yarn: chunky and fast for baskets and big totes.
  • Avoid: soft acrylic and wool for anything heavy — they stretch.

Handles and straps

  • Built-in handles: "ch, skip" openings in the top rounds — strongest and simplest.
  • Crochet straps: sc in back loops only for a ribbed strap that doesn't stretch.
  • Bought handles: wooden, bamboo or leather handles sewn on with strong thread.

Lining a crochet bag

A fabric lining stops small items slipping through, prevents stretching and adds pockets. Cut two fabric rectangles the size of the bag plus ½ in seam allowance, sew the sides and bottom, fold the top edge under and hand-stitch it just below the bag's top edge.

Common questions

What is the easiest crochet bag for beginners?

A coin purse or zipper pouch — both are small rectangles. Then try the mini bag, and the tote once you're comfortable.

How do I make a crochet bag hold its shape?

Use cotton, a smaller hook than the label suggests, single crochet for structure, a flat base and a lining.

What size hook for crochet bags?

Usually one size smaller than the yarn label suggests — e.g. 3.5–5 mm for worsted cotton — for a firm fabric.
