"Crochet tote bag" searches are up sharply this year, and for good reason: a tote is useful every day, shows off any stitch and makes a great gift. This one starts with a flat rectangular base so it stands up, has straight sides in half double crochet, and builds the handles into the top rounds — nothing to sew on, nothing to come loose.

The rest of this post is just below — free, as always.

Gauge

Gauge: 14 sc and 16 rows = 4 in; 13 hdc and 10 rounds = 4 in (10 cm) with worsted cotton.

The pattern

Base (worked in rows)

  1. Row 1: Ch 41. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Ch 1, turn. (40)
  2. Rows 2–12: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (40)

Body (worked in the round)

  1. Rnd 1: Don't turn. Ch 1. Sc 40 across the last row, 12 sc down the side (1 per row end), 40 along the foundation chain, 12 up the other side. Sl st to the first sc. Place a marker at the start — it's the corner where a long side begins. (104)
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in back loops only around. Join. (104)
  3. Rnds 3–31: Ch 2 (doesn't count), hdc around. Join. The bag grows about 13 in tall. (104)

  2. Rnd 33: Ch 1. Sc in each sc, and 16 sc into each ch-16 space. Join. (104)
  3. Rnds 34–35: Ch 1, sc around. Join. Fasten off. (104)

Want shoulder straps instead? Skip the handle openings and attach two 24-in straps made like the strap of our mini bag.

Make it your own

  • Textured body: swap hdc for the suzette stitch or moss stitch.
  • Stripes: a contrast stripe every 6 rounds.
  • Lining: hand-stitch a fabric lining with an inside pocket.
  • Mesh version: try our market bag for groceries.

Common questions

What yarn is best for a crochet tote bag?

Worsted cotton or cotton cord — strong, washable and less stretchy than acrylic. Hold two strands together for a very stiff bag.

How do I stop my tote from stretching?

Use a tight gauge, cotton yarn and sc for the top rounds. A fabric lining prevents stretching completely.

How much yarn does a crochet tote use?

About 450–550 yd of worsted cotton for this 11½ × 13 in tote.
