The moss stitch is two things you already know — a single crochet and a chain — arranged so the fabric looks woven. Each single crochet sits in the chain space of the row below, so stitches stagger like bricks. The result is flat, doesn't curl, and looks fantastic in stripes.

You'll also see it called linen stitch, granite stitch or woven stitch. (In knitting, "moss stitch" is something different.)

How to crochet moss stitch

Start with an even number of chains.

  1. Row 1: Ch 22. Sc in the 4th ch from the hook, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in the next ch*; repeat to the end. Turn.
  2. Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as a sc and ch 1). Sc in the first ch-1 space, *ch 1, sc in the next ch-1 space*; repeat across, working the last sc into the space under the turning chain. Turn.
  3. Row 3 onward: Repeat Row 2. Every sc goes into a ch-1 space; never into a stitch.

That's the rule to remember: sc into spaces, chain over stitches.

Why crocheters love moss stitch

  • It lies flat — no curling edges, so it's ideal for blankets and scarves.
  • Stripes look amazing, because the staggered stitches blend colours slightly.
  • It's mindless once you've done two rows — great TV crochet.
  • Drape: softer than plain sc, denser than dc.

Projects for moss stitch

Common questions

Is crochet moss stitch the same as linen stitch?

Yes. Moss, linen, granite and woven stitch are all names for alternating sc and ch 1, worked into the chain spaces below.

Why is my moss stitch getting wider?

You're probably working a sc into a stitch instead of a space at the edge. Check the last stitch of each row goes into the turning-chain space.

Does moss stitch use more yarn?

Slightly less than plain single crochet over the same area, because the chains are lighter than stitches.

What hook should I use for moss stitch?

The yarn label's recommended size, or half a size up for a softer blanket.
