The treble crochet (also called triple crochet, abbreviated tr) is the tallest of the everyday stitches — about four chains high. It makes an airy, lacy fabric that grows very fast.
The quick version: yarn over twice, insert, pull up a loop (4 loops), then yarn over and pull through two loops — three times.
UK patterns call this a double treble (dtr). A UK "treble" is a US double crochet.

How to treble crochet
- Step 1: Yarn over twice.
- Step 2: Insert the hook into the stitch.
- Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop. 4 loops on the hook.
- Step 4: Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. 3 loops remain.
- Step 5: Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. 2 loops remain.
- Step 6: Yarn over, pull through the last 2 loops. One treble made.
Practice swatch
- Row 1: Ch 19. Tr in the 5th ch from the hook (the skipped 4 ch count as the first tr) and across. (16)
- Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as a tr), turn. Skip the first st, tr in each st across, ending with a tr in the top of the turning chain. (16)
- Rows 3–8: Repeat Row 2. (16)
Where treble crochet shines
- Lace and shawls: combined with chains, trebles make open mesh fast.
- Flowers: tall petals — see our easy crochet flower.
- Hearts: the lobes of our magic-ring heart are trebles.
- Granny squares: the corners of many squares use tr for a sharp lift.
Taller still
Each extra starting yarn over adds one more "pull through two" and roughly one chain of height: a double treble (dtr) has three yarn overs, a triple treble (trtr) four.
Common questions
Is triple crochet the same as treble crochet?
Yes — in US patterns both names mean the same stitch (two yarn overs before inserting the hook).
Why do my trebles look loose and loopy?
Pull the first loop up only to about the height of two chains and keep even tension through each pull-through. Tall stitches exaggerate inconsistencies.
How many chains for a treble turning chain?
Four. Traditionally it counts as the first stitch of the row.
