An ear warmer is the most-gifted crochet accessory for a reason: it's quick, it uses one ball of yarn and it fits almost everyone. This one is a ribbed band — half double crochet worked into the third loop — finished with a turban-style twist that hides the seam and looks far fancier than it is.

Gauge and sizes

Gauge: 12 hdc and 9 rows = 4 in. The band is made 1–2 in smaller than the head so it stays snug.

Teen / small adult20–21 in18 in40
Adult21–23 in19½ in44

The pattern

  1. Row 1: Ch 15. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Ch 2 (doesn't count), turn. (13)
  2. Row 2 onward: Hdc in the third loop (the horizontal bar behind the top "V" on the side facing you) of each st across. Ch 2, turn. (13)
  3. Length: Work the number of rows for your size. Fasten off, leaving a 20-in tail.

The third loop pushes the top loops forward into a raised line, creating a knit-look rib. More in our hdc guide.

The turban twist

  1. Step 1: Lay the band flat, right side up, and bring the two short ends together.
  2. Step 2: Fold the first end in half lengthwise, like a taco, right side out.
  3. Step 3: Fold the second end in half the same way and slide it inside the fold of the first, so the two folds interlock.
  4. Step 4: With the long tail, sew through all four layers along the edge. Turn the band right side out — the twist sits at the front, and the seam is hidden inside it.

Make it your own

  • No twist: just seam the ends flat and add a big button.
  • Wider band: ch 19 for a 6-in band that covers more ear.
  • Fluffy: brushed or mohair-blend yarn for a soft halo.
  • Gift set: pair with our cowl in the same yarn.

Common questions

How do I measure for an ear warmer?

Measure around the head over the ears, then subtract 1½–2 in for a snug fit.

What yarn is warmest for an ear warmer?

Wool and wool blends. Superwash merino is soft against the forehead and machine washable.

Can a beginner make this?

Yes — it's just hdc in rows. The third loop is easy to find once you've seen it, and the twist is only folding and sewing.

Making these for everyone this winter? We don't blame you. ❄️
