Crochet tops are one of the fastest-growing crochet searches of the year, and this is the friendliest way in: the front and back are identical rectangles in half double crochet, joined at the sides, with two straps. No shaping, no increases, and it fits because the numbers come from your bust measurement.

Make it cropped for high-waisted jeans and skirts, or longer as a summer tank. In the US and UK it's a summer project; in Australia and New Zealand, it's perfect right now as spring warms up.

Gauge and sizing

Gauge: 16 hdc and 12 rows = 4 in (10 cm), after blocking. Check it with a swatch — see our gauge guide. Choose the size closest to your bust measurement; the top is designed with little to no ease for a fitted look.

The pattern

Front and back (make 2)

  1. Row 1: Ch the number for your size. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Ch 2 (doesn't count as a st), turn. (60, 68, 76, 84, 92, 100)
  2. Rows 2–36: Hdc across. Ch 2, turn. This makes a 12-in cropped panel. For a full-length tank, work to Row 54 (18 in).
  3. Edging: Ch 1 and sc evenly around the panel, 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off.

Straps (make 2)

  1. Row 1: Ch 62. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Fasten off. (60)
  2. Row 2: Sc along the other side of the chain for a firmer strap that won't stretch.

The strap is about 15 in. Pin and try on before sewing — strap length is personal.

Assembly

  1. Side seams: Place front and back together. Whipstitch or sl st each side seam from the hem up, leaving the top 3 in (3½ in for XL–2XL) open for the armholes.
  2. Straps: Sew each strap to the top edge of the front about 2½ in in from the side, then over the shoulder to the matching spot on the back. Try it on before the final stitches.
  3. Block: Wet block flat to even out the hdc.

Make it your own

  • Ribbed hem: work the last 4 rows of each panel in the third loop for a knit-look rib — see our hdc guide.
  • Lacy version: swap hdc for the shell stitch on the lower half.
  • Make a set: pair it with our crochet skirt — see two-piece sets.
  • Tie straps: make 4 straps of ch 40 and tie them in bows on the shoulders for adjustable fit.

Common questions

What yarn is best for a crochet top?

Cotton or a cotton blend in DK weight. It's breathable, has crisp stitch definition and doesn't stretch out as much as acrylic in hot weather. Bamboo blends drape beautifully.

Will the top be see-through?

Hdc in DK cotton is fairly solid. For more coverage, use a 4 mm hook; for a lacier top, use a 5 mm.

How do I pick my size?

Measure around the fullest part of your bust and choose the closest finished bust. For a relaxed fit, go one size up.

How long does a crochet top take?

About 6 hours for XS cropped, up to 10 hours for 2XL full length.
