"Crochet set" searches have more than doubled this year, and the look is simple: a top and a bottom in the same yarn, often with the same stitch or edging so they read as one outfit. You don't need a special set pattern — combine two that share a yarn weight and gauge.
Below is a fast ribbed bandeau top, then three ways to build a set from our free patterns.
The rest of this post is just below — free, as always.
Ribbed bandeau top
The bandeau is worked sideways in rows of single crochet through the back loops, which makes a stretchy rib. Its length is your bust measurement minus 2 in, for a snug fit that stays up. Gauge: 18 sc = 4 in; 24 rows = 4 in in BLO rib.
- Row 1: Ch 27. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Ch 1, turn. (26)
- Row 2 onward: Sc in back loops only across. Ch 1, turn. (26)
- Length: Continue until the strip stretched gently around your bust measures your bust minus 2 in — about 6 rows per inch.
- Join: Sl st the first and last rows together into a tube.
- Edges: Sc evenly around the top and bottom edges to stabilise them.
- Optional ties: Add two ch-60 halter ties to the top edge for extra security.
Three sets you can make from free patterns
| Set | Top | Bottom | Vibe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | Square-neck crop top | A-line skirt | Brunch, holidays |
| Beach | Triangle bikini top | Drawstring shorts | Beach, pool |
| Festival | Ribbed bandeau (above) | Mini skirt in granny stripes | Concerts, summer parties |
Tips for a set that looks designed
- Use the same dye lot for both pieces so the colour matches exactly. Buy all the yarn at once.
- Repeat one detail: the same hem edging (shells, crab stitch or a contrast sc round) on both pieces ties them together.
- Keep the gauge equal: make one swatch and use it for both pieces.
- Colour ideas: butter yellow, sage, lilac, cream, or a two-tone set (cream top, sage skirt).
How much yarn for a set
Add the two patterns' yardages together and buy 10% extra. A bandeau and mini skirt in size M uses roughly 800 yd of DK; a crop top and midi skirt can use 1,300–1,500 yd. More in how much yarn do I need.
Common questions
What is a crochet set?
A matching (co-ord) outfit made of two crochet pieces — usually a top and a skirt or shorts — in the same yarn and style.
What yarn is best for crochet sets?
Cotton blends in DK weight: breathable, soft and less prone to stretching than pure cotton.
Will a bandeau stay up?
Negative ease (2 in smaller than your bust) and the stretchy rib keep it in place. Add halter ties or clear straps for active days.
