Before you buy a single skein, decide how big your blanket should be. These are common blanket sizes used by crocheters and manufacturers — sizes vary a little from source to source, so think of them as starting points and measure the bed or person when it matters.

Bed blankets here are sized to drape over the sides. A blanket that sits only on top of the mattress can be much smaller — measure your mattress and add the overhang you want.

How to calculate your stitches and rows

  1. Make a gauge swatch in your yarn and stitch and measure stitches and rows per inch — see our gauge guide.
  2. Stitches = width in inches × stitches per inch.
  3. Rows = length in inches × rows per inch.
  4. Adjust the stitch count to fit the pattern's repeat (e.g. a multiple of 12 + 1 for our ripple).

Example: a throw (50 × 60 in) at 3 hdc and 2.25 rows per inch = 150 stitches and 135 rows — exactly our beginner blanket.

Granny square blankets

Divide the width and length by the size of one square. With 6-in squares, a throw (50 × 60) needs about 8 × 10 = 80 squares; with 4-in squares, about 12 × 15 = 180. Add a border to make up any difference.

Common questions

What size is a crochet baby blanket?

Usually 30 × 36 in (76 × 91 cm), though anything from 30 × 30 to 40 × 40 in works for a baby or stroller blanket.

What size is a crochet throw blanket?

Around 50 × 60 in (127 × 152 cm) — big enough to cover an adult on the sofa.

How much yarn for a queen-size crochet blanket?

Roughly 5,800–7,000 yards of worsted yarn, depending on the stitch. Textured stitches use more. See how much yarn do I need.
