How to Stop Stuffing Showing Through Amigurumi
Fibrefill peeks through when stitches are too loose: the hook is too big for the yarn, the tension relaxes, or the toy is over-stuffed. Five fixes, from hook size to the yarn-under stitch and a hidden liner.

In this post
Stuffing shows through amigurumi when the stitches are too open for the fibrefill behind them. Use a hook one or two sizes smaller than the yarn label suggests, keep your tension firm, and stuff firmly but not so much that the stitches stretch apart. Switching to the "yarn under" single crochet makes even tighter stitches.

Five fixes
- Smaller hook: For worsted yarn, use 3–3.5 mm instead of 5 mm. For DK, 2.5–3 mm.
- Yarn under: On the last step of each sc, catch the yarn from under the hook instead of over. Stitches become X-shaped and tighter.
- Firm tension: Keep the yarn snug in your fingers through every round; tension often relaxes as you speed up.
- Stuff right: Pull the fibrefill apart into small wisps and add a little at a time. Lumpy balls of stuffing push stitches open. Stop when the shape is firm but the stitches aren't stretched.
- Liner: For a toy with dark yarn, wrap the stuffing in a piece of matching fabric or nylon tights before stuffing, so any gap shows colour, not white.

| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Gaps at decreases | Use the invisible decrease (front loops only) |
| White stuffing in dark toys | Use grey or black fibrefill |
| Fuzzy yarn shows gaps less | Brushed or chenille yarns hide stuffing naturally |
| Gap at the magic ring | Use a double magic ring (magic ring fixes) |

Common questions
What hook size should I use for amigurumi?
One or two sizes smaller than the yarn label: about 3–3.5 mm for worsted and 2.5–3 mm for DK.
Does yarn under really make tighter stitches?
Yes. It slightly twists each stitch so it sits closer to its neighbours, and makes neat X-shaped stitches.
How much stuffing should amigurumi have?
Enough to hold a firm shape without stretching the stitches. Squeeze it — it should spring back.
Yarn over or yarn under — which do you use? 🧸
