This bat is a ball with ears and wings — which means if you can make a crochet ball, you can make it tonight. It works up in about 45 minutes and uses barely 30 yards of yarn, so it's the perfect use for black scraps.

Worked in a spiral with a 3.5 mm hook and worsted yarn, the fabric is tight enough that the stuffing never shows.

The rest of this post is just below — free, as always.

Wings (make 2) — worked flat

  1. Row 1: Ch 2, 3 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Ch 1, turn. (3)
  2. Row 2: Inc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (6)
  3. Row 3: (Sc, inc) 3 times. Turn — no chain. (9)
  4. Row 4 (scallops): Sl st in the first st, *skip 1 st, 5 dc in the next st, skip 1 st, sl st in the next st*; repeat once more. (2 scallops)
  5. Finish: Fasten off with a tail. Sew the narrow point of each wing to the side of the body, level with Rnd 6.

Make it your own

  • Bat garland: make five and string them on a 4-foot chain, one every 8 inches — see our Halloween garland.
  • Fangs: two tiny white straight stitches under the eyes.
  • Keychain: sew a split ring to the top of the head before closing, as in our keychain guide.
  • Pastel goth: lilac, mint or pink bats are hugely popular and sell well at fall markets.

Common questions

Are safety eyes safe for babies?

No toy with small parts is safe for children under three. For a baby's bat, embroider the eyes with white and black yarn instead.

How do I make the bat bigger?

Use super bulky yarn and a 5 mm hook — the same pattern makes a bat about 4 in tall. Or add rounds: keep increasing to 24 sts, work 6 plain rounds and decrease back down.

My wings curl. How do I flatten them?

Spray them lightly with water, pin them flat on a towel and let them dry. Acrylic can also be set with a quick pass of steam (don't touch the iron to the yarn).

What yarn is best for a crochet bat?

Any smooth worsted yarn. Black shows stitches poorly in dim light, so crochet near a lamp or use a dark charcoal instead.
