A good witch hat is all in the point, and the point comes from increasing slowly: just three stitches every other round. Increase faster and you get a cone that looks like a party hat; this rate gives a proper tall, crooked witch's peak.

The brim is worked straight onto the cone through the front loops, so there's nothing to sew together.

Work in continuous rounds with a stitch marker.

Shaping and finishing

  • The crooked tip: push a little fiberfill into the top 2 inches, then bend the tip over and tack it down with one stitch.
  • Stiff brim: mist with water and dry flat under a book, or brush on watered-down glue.
  • Headband: sew the hat to a plain headband at a jaunty angle, or to an alligator clip.
  • Buckle: a gold or silver jewellery charm on the orange band finishes the look.

Make it your own

  • Pumpkin topper: it fits our medium crochet pumpkin exactly.
  • Adult-size hat: use super bulky yarn and a 9 mm hook, and repeat the plain round twice between increase rounds once you pass 24 stitches, until the opening fits your head (about 22 in for most adults).
  • Pet hat: add two chain-40 ties at the brim to fasten under the chin — always supervise pets in costume.

Common questions

Why does my witch hat look like a cone, not a point?

You're increasing too often. Increase by 3 stitches every other round; for an even taller hat, work two plain rounds between each increase round.

How do I make the brim flat instead of wavy?

A wavy brim has too many stitches. Skip Rnd 19, or go down a hook size for the brim only.

Can I make it in one colour?

Yes — skip the colour changes. Add a ribbon band instead.
