Crochet Spider Web: A Giant Halloween Web (and a Tiny Spider)
A lacy web worked in growing loops — hang it in a window, drape it over the porch light or stiffen it into a doily. Includes a 15-minute spider to sit in the middle.

In this post
A crochet spider web is the Halloween decoration that looks the hardest and is actually the easiest: after the first round it's nothing but chain loops that get two chains longer every round. Stop at any size you like.
Black yarn looks dramatic against a window; white or glow-in-the-dark yarn looks wonderfully creepy on a dark front door.

The pattern
The web
- Rnd 1: Ch 4 and sl st to the first ch to make a ring. Ch 1, 8 sc in the ring. Sl st to the first sc. (8 sc)
- Rnd 2: *Ch 5, sc in the next sc*; repeat around, working the last sc into the first st of the round. (8 loops)
- Rnd 3: Sl st into the next 3 ch to reach the middle of the first loop. *Ch 7, sc in the middle of the next loop*; repeat around. (8 loops)
- Rnd 4: Sl st to the middle of the first loop. *Ch 9, sc in the middle of the next loop*; repeat around. (8 loops)
- Rnd 5: As Rnd 4 with ch 11. (8 loops)
- Rnd 6: As Rnd 4 with ch 13. (8 loops)
- Rnd 7 onward: Keep adding 2 chains per loop each round until the web is the size you want. Fasten off and weave in the end.
Six rounds give about a 12-inch web. Ten rounds (up to ch 21) give about 24 inches — big enough for a porch.
Spider (optional)
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
- Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12)
- Rnds 3–4: Sc in each st around. Add 6 mm eyes between Rnds 2 and 3. (12)
- Rnd 5: Dec 6 times. Stuff and close. (6)
- Legs: Cut four 6-in lengths of yarn. Pull each one through the underside with a needle so both ends stick out, then knot each leg near the tip to make a "knee". Eight legs total.
Stiffen it (optional)
For a web that holds its shape on a table or wall, mix white glue and water half and half, soak the web, squeeze out the excess and pin it flat on cardboard covered in plastic wrap, pulling each loop into a slight point. Leave it overnight.
Make it your own
- Corner web: work only 2 loops per round in rows (turning each time) for a quarter-web that tucks into a window corner.
- Thread doily: crochet cotton thread with a 2 mm hook makes a delicate 6-inch web for a candle mat.
- Party set: pair it with our bats and pumpkins.
Common questions
How do you crochet a spider web for beginners?
Make a ring of 8 single crochet, then work rounds of chain loops joined with a single crochet into the middle of each loop below, adding two chains per loop every round. That's the whole technique.
Why does my web ripple instead of lying flat?
Your loops are growing too fast. Add only two chains per round; if it still ripples, add two chains every other round.
Can I use this outside?
Yes, with acrylic yarn, which won't rot or fade quickly. Cotton absorbs rain and sags.
How big can I make it?
As big as your yarn lasts. Each round uses roughly 8 more chains per loop than the last, so large webs eat yarn fast — a 3-foot web takes about 250 yd.
