In this post
Candy corn is a triangle in three colours, and this pattern gets its triangular shape the clever way: every round increases at just three points, so the piece grows into a three-sided cone instead of a round one.
It's worked from the white tip down to the yellow base in one piece, with a colour change every four rounds. Thirty minutes, three scraps of yarn.
The rest of this post is just below — free, as always.
The pattern
Work in continuous rounds. To change colour cleanly, switch to the new colour on the last yarn-over of the final stitch of the old colour.
Candy corn (one piece)
- Rnd 1 (white): 4 sc in a magic ring. (4)
- Rnd 2: (Sc, inc) twice. (6)
- Rnd 3: (Sc, inc) 3 times. (9)
- Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) 3 times. Change to orange. (12)
- Rnd 5 (orange): (3 sc, inc) 3 times. (15)
- Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) 3 times. (18)
- Rnd 7: (5 sc, inc) 3 times. Change to yellow. (21)
- Rnd 8 (yellow): (6 sc, inc) 3 times. (24)
- Rnd 9: Sc in each st around. (24)
- Rnd 10: In back loops only: (2 sc, dec) 6 times. (18)
- Rnd 11: (Sc, dec) 6 times. Stuff lightly. (12)
- Rnd 12: Dec 6 times. (6)
- Finish: Fasten off and close the hole. Pinch the base flat so it sits upright.
Stack the increases above each other every round and the three corners stay crisp. If your corners drift, place a marker in each increase.
Make it your own
- Kawaii face: 6 mm eyes in the orange band, 3 stitches apart, with a tiny black smile and pink cheeks.
- Candy corn garland: sew a loop to each tip and string a dozen on twine.
- Giant pillow: super bulky yarn with a 6 mm hook — add 4 more rounds per colour band.
- Reverse it: brown, orange and white makes "Indian corn" candy for Thanksgiving tables.
Common questions
How do you make a crochet triangle shape in the round?
Increase at three evenly spaced points every round instead of six. Six increases make a flat circle or ball; three make a three-sided cone.
How do I change colours without a jog?
In spiral rounds a small step is unavoidable. Hide it at the back, and on the first stitch of the new colour, work a slip stitch instead of a sc for a smoother line.
Can I make this without stuffing?
Yes — stop after Rnd 9, flatten and sew the bottom closed for a flat appliqué to sew on a bag or hat.
Team candy corn or team “please no”? Either way, this one's calorie-free. 🍬
