In this post
Black cats deserve better than their spooky reputation, and this one is all charm: a big round head, ears that stand up, and a tail that curls around the paws. It's a classic amigurumi build — head, body, four legs, ears and tail — with every round counted.
Use a 3.5 mm hook with worsted yarn for a tight fabric. On black, a loose fabric shows white stuffing immediately.

With pink yarn, embroider a small triangle nose between the eyes, one round lower. Add three white whisker stitches on each side if you like. A tiny orange bow at the neck is very Halloween.
Common questions
How do I see my stitches in black yarn?
Work under a bright daylight lamp, use a light-coloured hook, and put a white towel on your lap. Count stitches by feel at the end of each round, and use a bright stitch marker.
Can I make a different coloured cat?
Of course — the pattern works for any cat. Grey, ginger or white with a pink nose; for a tabby, alternate two colours every two rounds on the body.
What size safety eyes work best?
10 mm for this head. 12 mm makes a more kawaii, big-eyed cat; 8 mm looks more realistic.
Is this a good first amigurumi?
It's a good second one. If you've never made amigurumi, start with something one-piece like our crochet ball to practise increases and decreases first.
