Crochet is naturally denser than knitting, but it goes stiff when the hook is too small for the yarn, the stitch is very dense (like single crochet), or the yarn itself is harsh. For a soft, drapey scarf, sweater or blanket, go up one or two hook sizes, use taller or more open stitches, and choose a softer yarn. A finished piece can be softened by washing with conditioner and, for acrylic, a little steam.

What makes crochet stiff

CauseFix for the next project
Hook too smallGo up 1–2 sizes from the label for wearables
Dense stitch (sc)Half double, double, V-stitch or moss stitch
Tight tensionSee why crochet is tight
Harsh or bulky yarnMerino, cotton-blend, bamboo blends or soft acrylic in DK weight
Working in back loops onlyMakes a thicker ridge — use both loops for drape

Soften a finished piece

  1. Soak: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a teaspoon of hair conditioner (or fabric softener). Submerge the piece for 20–30 minutes.
  2. Optional rinse: A splash of white vinegar in the rinse water removes residue that makes cotton feel crisp.
  3. Squeeze, don't wring: Press out the water, then roll it in a towel.
  4. Dry flat: Lay it flat in shape. Cotton and acrylic can then go in a tumble dryer on low with a couple of tennis balls for extra softness.
  5. Acrylic only — steam: Hold a steam iron just above the fabric (never touching) and let the steam relax it. This "kills" the acrylic slightly: it drapes much more, permanently. Test on a swatch first.

When stiff is good

Baskets, bags, ornaments and amigurumi should be firm. If you want a piece stiffer, not softer, see how to make crochet stiff. Choosing yarn for drape? The best yarn for beginners guide compares fibres.

Common questions

How do I make my crochet blanket softer?

Wash it with conditioner or fabric softener and tumble dry on low. For next time, use a bigger hook and a softer yarn.

Does washing make crochet softer?

Yes, especially cotton and acrylic — the first wash relaxes the fibres and removes spinning oils.

Why is my crochet sweater so stiff?

Usually thick yarn on a small hook. Garments drape best in DK or sport weight on a hook one or two sizes larger than the label.
