To make crochet stiff, soak it in fabric stiffener (or a 1:1 mix of white PVA glue and water), squeeze out the excess, pin it into shape over plastic wrap, and let it dry for 24 hours. For a lighter hold — doilies, bows, collars — use spray starch. Cotton thread and cotton yarn take stiffener best; acrylic barely holds it.

How to stiffen

  1. Prepare: Cover a foam board with plastic wrap. For 3D shapes, cover a balloon, cup or cone with plastic wrap.
  2. Soak: Submerge the crochet in the stiffener for a minute until fully saturated.
  3. Squeeze: Press out the excess (don't wring). Blot with a paper towel so the holes don't fill with film.
  4. Shape: Pin flat pieces on the board, pinning every point and picot. Stretch 3D pieces over their form.
  5. Dry: Leave 24 hours, or until completely dry and hard. Then unpin.
  6. Clear holes: If a film formed across a gap, poke it out with a pin while still slightly damp.

Common questions

Can I use school glue to stiffen crochet?

Yes. White PVA glue mixed 1:1 with water works like fabric stiffener and dries clear.

Does stiffened crochet survive washing?

Glue and commercial stiffener mostly don't wash out; sugar, cornstarch and spray starch do, so re-stiffen after washing.

Can you stiffen acrylic yarn?

Not well. Acrylic repels water-based stiffeners. Use cotton for anything that needs to hold a shape.
