Why Is My Crochet Hat Flat, Pointy or Wavy? Crown Shape Fixes
A hat that stays flat like a beret has kept increasing too long; a pointy one stopped too soon; a wavy brim has too many stitches or loose tension. How to shape a smooth, rounded crown.

A crochet hat's shape depends on when you stop increasing. Keep increasing too long and the crown stays flat like a beret or a plate; stop too soon and it turns pointy like a cone; increase unevenly and the crown gets corners. A wavy brim means too many stitches at the edge or loose tension in the last rounds.

Diagnose the shape
| Shape | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Flat top, wide like a beret | Increased past the crown diameter | Stop increasing at (head − 1 in) ÷ 3.14 |
| Pointy or cone | Stopped increasing too early | Add increase rounds until the circle is wide enough |
| Corners on the crown | Increases stacked in the same place | Stagger the increases each round |
| Wavy brim | Too many stitches or loose tension at the edge | Ribbed band or smaller hook for the brim |
| Bulge partway down | An accidental increase round | Count; frog back to the extra stitches |
Shape a rounded crown
- Flat circle first: Increase evenly (8 hdc or 10 hdc per round, 12 dc) until the circle reaches the crown diameter — see hat size formula.
- Stagger: On every other round, start the repeat halfway so increases don't stack.
- One transition round (optional): For a softer curve, work one round with half the usual increases before the straight rounds.
- Straight rounds: No increases from here to the brim. The sides drop down naturally.
- Brim: Finish with 3–4 rounds of ribbing or a round of sc with a hook one size smaller to keep it from flaring.
Same logic as a flat circle: if it ruffles or cups, see why your circle isn't flat. Patterns to try: beginner beanie, bucket hat and football hat.
Common questions
Why does my crochet beanie look like a beret?
You kept increasing after the crown was wide enough. Frog back to the round where the circle matched the crown diameter and work straight from there.
Why is my crochet hat pointy?
Too few increase rounds. Add increase rounds until the flat circle is wide enough, then work straight.
How do I stop a crochet brim from flaring?
Use post-stitch ribbing, or a hook one size smaller for the last few rounds.
