A crochet poinsettia is a layered flower of pointed petals made from short chains. Each petal is a chain worked on both sides with stitches that rise from slip stitch to treble and back, so it's pointed at both ends. You make five large red petals, five smaller ones and three green leaves, then sew them around a yellow centre. The finished flower is about 6 inches across.

Centre and assembly

  1. Centre: In yellow, 6 sc in a magic ring, sl st. Then work a bobble of 3 dc-together in 3 of the stitches for texture — or simply sew 5–7 yellow French knots in the middle of the flower.
  2. Leaves: Arrange the three leaves in a Y shape and stitch them together at the base.
  3. Large petals: Lay the five large petals evenly on top, bases meeting in the centre. Stitch them down.
  4. Small petals: Place the small petals between the large ones, on top. Stitch down, then sew the yellow centre over all the bases.

Common questions

How do you crochet poinsettia petals?

Chain 10 and work back along it with increasing stitch heights — sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr — then back down. Repeat on the other side of the chain so the petal is pointed at both ends.

How many petals does a crochet poinsettia need?

Ten red petals (five large and five small) and three green leaves look full. Real poinsettias have up to 12 bracts, so you can add more.

How do I keep the petals flat?

Block them: pin each petal flat, mist with water and let it dry. A little spray starch keeps them crisp on a wreath.
