The rolled rose is crochet's most convincing flower, and it's made in two rows. The first row is a strip of V-stitches; the second puts a shell into each V, with shells that start large and get smaller. Roll the strip up from the small end and the shells become petals: tight in the centre, open at the edge.

The pattern

A V-stitch is (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same stitch.

  1. Row 1: Ch 31. (Dc, ch 1, dc) in the 5th ch from the hook. *Skip 1 ch, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next ch*; repeat to the end. (14 V-stitches)
  2. Row 2: Ch 3, turn. Work 7 dc into the ch-1 space of each of the first 5 V-stitches, 5 dc into each of the next 5, and 3 dc into each of the last 4. Sl st into the turning chain. Fasten off, leaving a 12-in tail. (5 large, 5 medium, 4 small shells)

Rolling the rose

  1. Step 1: Start at the end with the smallest shells (where you fastened off). Roll the strip tightly for the first two or three shells to form the bud.
  2. Step 2: Keep rolling more loosely, keeping the bottom edge (the foundation chain) level. The larger shells flare outward.
  3. Step 3: Thread the tail on a needle and sew back and forth through all the layers at the base, several times, so nothing can unroll.
  4. Step 4: Fold the outer petals back slightly with your fingers.

Stem and leaves

Push 18-gauge floral wire up through the base, glue it, and wrap it in green floral tape or yarn. Add a leaf: ch 10, then sl st, sc, hdc, dc in the next 4 ch, hdc, 3 sc in the last ch, and back down the other side. Full instructions in our bouquet guide.

Make it your own

  • Bigger rose: ch 41 for 19 V-stitches, adding 5 more large shells.
  • Mini roses: DK yarn and a 3 mm hook for hair clips and appliqués.
  • Ombré: work Row 2 in a lighter shade for petals that fade at the tips.
  • Valentine's dozen: twelve red roses with hearts as fillers.

Common questions

Why does my rose look flat?

Roll the first shells tightly and keep the base level as you roll. Sewing through all layers several times holds the shape.

What yarn is best for crochet roses?

Cotton for crisp, defined petals; acrylic or velvet yarn for softer, fuller roses.

How many roses for a bouquet?

A classic dozen is 12; a mini bouquet looks full with 5 roses and some leaves.
