Tulips are the easiest "real" flower to crochet: the bloom is a short cup worked in single crochet, and the final round shapes three pointed petals in one go. A little stuffing keeps the cup round, and a wire stem lets you arrange it in a vase or bouquet.

The pattern

Tulip bloom (worked bottom up)

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: (Sc, inc) 6 times. (18)
  4. Rnds 4–9: Sc around. (18)
  5. Rnd 10 (petals): *Sl st in the next st, sc in the next st, hdc in the next st, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next st, hdc in the next st, sc in the next st*; repeat twice more. Sl st to the first st and fasten off. (3 petals)

Each petal uses 6 stitches; the (dc, ch 2, dc) makes its point.

Stem

  1. Step 1: Bend a small loop at the end of a 12–14 in piece of floral wire.
  2. Step 2: Push the straight end down through the centre of the magic ring from inside the cup, so the loop sits on the inside bottom. Add a drop of hot glue.
  3. Step 3: Tuck a small ball of fiberfill into the cup to round it out.
  4. Step 4: Wrap the wire in floral tape or glue-and-wrap it with green yarn.

Leaf (green)

  1. Row 1: Ch 21. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: sl st, sc, hdc, dc in the next 14 ch, hdc, sc, 3 sc in the last ch.
  2. Other side: Sc, hdc, dc in the next 14 ch, hdc, sc, sl st. Fasten off.
  3. Attach: Wrap the base of the leaf around the stem about 4 in below the bloom and glue or stitch it in place.

Make it your own

  • Two-tone tulips: work Rnds 1–6 in one colour and 7–10 in another.
  • Tulip keychain: skip the wire and add a split ring.
  • Spring bouquet: five tulips and leaves — see our bouquet guide.
  • Pot of tulips: push wires into floral foam in a small pot and cover with brown yarn "soil".

Common questions

How do I make the petals stand up?

Use cotton, which holds its shape, and stuff the cup lightly to push the petals outward. A quick spray of starch helps too.

How big is the tulip?

About 2½ in tall with worsted yarn and a 3.5 mm hook. Use bulky yarn and a 5 mm hook for a 3½-in tulip.

Can I make a tulip without wire?

Yes — crochet a stem: 6 sc in a magic ring, then sc around until it's as long as you want, and stuff it tightly or slip in a straw.
