In this post
A sunflower makes any bouquet look sunny, and this one has real depth: the centre's last round is worked so that both the front and back loops stay free, and each holds its own layer of petals. Twelve petals in front, twelve offset behind.
The rest of this post is just below — free, as always.
The pattern
Centre (brown)
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in a magic ring. Sl st to join. (6)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st. Join. (12)
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, (sc, 2 sc in next) 6 times. Join. (18)
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, (2 sc, 2 sc in next) 6 times. Join and fasten off. (24)
For a textured centre, work Rnd 3 as (sc, bobble) — a bobble is 3 unfinished dc in one stitch, closed together.
Front petals (yellow, front loops of Rnd 4)
- Rnd 5: Join yellow in the front loop of any st. *Ch 7, then working back along the chain from the 2nd ch from the hook: sl st, sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr. Skip the next st of Rnd 4, sl st in the front loop of the following st*; repeat 11 more times. Fasten off. (12 petals)
Back petals (yellow, back loops of Rnd 4)
- Rnd 6: Fold the front petals forward. Join yellow in the back loop of a st that sits between two front petals. Repeat the petal sequence from Rnd 5, working into back loops, so each back petal peeks out between two front petals. Fasten off. (12 petals)
Back cover (green)
- Rnds 1–4: Work as the centre in green. (24)
- Finish: Sew the green circle to the back of the sunflower, covering all the petal joins. Insert a wire stem between the layers before closing, if you like.
Uses
- Bouquet star: one or two sunflowers anchor a crochet bouquet.
- Coaster: skip the stem — it's the right size for a mug.
- Appliqué: on a tote bag or bucket hat.
- Car charm: a mini sunflower in DK on a cord — like our car hanging charm.
Common questions
How do I keep the petals flat?
Block the sunflower: mist with water, pin each petal flat on a towel, and let it dry. Cotton holds the shape best.
Can I make a smaller sunflower?
Use DK cotton and a 3 mm hook (about 3½ in), or skip the back petal layer for a simpler flower.
How do I attach a stem?
Sandwich a looped wire between the flower and the green back cover, glue it, and sew the back cover on around the edge.
