Crochet isn't hard to learn. You need one hook, and you only ever have one live loop, so mistakes are easy to undo. Most people learn the chain and single crochet in an evening and finish a simple project — a dishcloth or scarf — within a week of 20–30 minutes a day. The hard part for everyone is the first hour: holding the yarn and keeping even tension feels awkward until your hands learn it.

A 7-day plan

  1. Day 1: Slip knot and chains. Make a chain as long as your arm, then pull it out and do it again.
  2. Day 2: Single crochet into a 15-stitch chain. Five rows.
  3. Day 3: Turning and the second row; learn to count stitches.
  4. Day 4: Half double and double crochet rows on your swatch.
  5. Day 5: Start a dishcloth.
  6. Day 6: Finish the dishcloth; fasten off and weave in the ends.
  7. Day 7: Choose your second project: a scarf, a granny square or a ball.

Tips that make learning easier

  • Use smooth, light-coloured worsted yarn — dark or fuzzy yarn hides the stitches.
  • Use a 5 mm hook; tiny hooks and thin yarn are harder.
  • Expect a wonky first piece. Everyone's first dishcloth is wonky.
  • Stuck? Crochet help & fixes answers the common problems.
