A good crochet beach bag has a solid base and an open body. The base keeps small things in; the open V-stitch sides let sand fall out and wet towels breathe. This tote is about 16 × 13 inches, big enough for two beach towels, sunscreen and a water bottle. Holding worsted cotton double on a 6 mm hook makes it strong and quick.
It's ready for an Australian summer at Christmas, or Northern Hemisphere beach days next year.

Cord or yarn?
| Material | Hook | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Worsted cotton held double | 6 mm | Soft and strong (this pattern) |
| 3 mm cotton macramé cord | 6 mm | Firmer, more structured |
| Paper raffia | 5 mm | Crisp, water-resistant, more of a "straw" look — see the raffia bag |

Common questions
What is the best stitch for a crochet beach bag?
An open stitch such as V-stitch, mesh or shells, so sand falls through and wet items dry. Keep a solid single crochet base so small items don't slip out.
Will a cotton beach bag stretch?
A little when full and wet. Holding the yarn double and working three rounds of sc on the handles keeps stretching to a minimum.
How do I wash a crochet beach bag?
Shake out the sand, rinse in cool water and dry it flat in the shade. Cotton can be machine washed in a laundry bag.
