A crochet drawstring bag is a flat circle with a tube on top, closed by a cord threaded through a round of eyelets. Two cords pulled from opposite sides close it much tighter than one. Make the base, work half double crochet rounds to the height you want, add an eyelet round of (dc, ch 1) and thread the cords. It takes about 3 hours.

Base

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (12)
  3. Rnds 3–10: Increase 6 stitches per round: (1 sc, inc) × 6, then (2 sc, inc) × 6, and so on to (8 sc, inc) × 6. (60)
  4. Check: The base should lie flat, about 5½ in across.

Body

  1. Rnd 11: Sc in the back loop only of each st — this turns the edge up. (60)
  2. Rnds 12–32: Hdc in each st around. (60)
  3. Rnd 33 (eyelets): Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), skip 1, *dc in the next, ch 1, skip 1* around. Join to the 3rd ch. (30 eyelets)
  4. Rnds 34–35: Sc in each st and each ch-1 space. Fasten off. (60)

Drawstrings

  1. Cords (make 2): Ch 110 (about 30 in), sl st in the back bump of each ch back along.
  2. Cord 1: Starting at one side, weave in and out of all the eyelets and come back out next to where you started. Knot the ends together.
  3. Cord 2: Starting at the opposite side, weave the full way round the same way. Knot.
  4. Pull both knots away from each other to close. Add beads to the knots if you like.

Common questions

How do you make a drawstring bag close tightly?

Use two drawstrings threaded through the same eyelets from opposite sides. Pulling both knots apart closes the bag evenly from both sides.

What is the best yarn for a drawstring bag?

Cotton for a firm bag that holds shape. Cotton-acrylic blends are lighter for gift bags.

How do I keep the base flat?

Increase exactly 6 stitches per round and stagger them if the base turns into a hexagon. If it curls, add an increase round; if it ripples, skip one.
