In this post
A crochet clutch is a small, strapless bag carried in the hand — usually an envelope with a pointed flap. Make one rectangle in tight single crochet, decrease the last rows to a point for the flap, fold up the bottom third and seam the sides. In mercerised DK cotton it has a soft sheen; in a metallic blend it's ready for a wedding or a party.

The clutch
- Row 1: Ch 46. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Ch 1, turn. (45)
- Rows 2–56: Sc in the back loop only of each st on odd rows and both loops on even rows — fine horizontal ridges. Ch 1, turn. (45)
- Flap, rows 57–78: Sc2tog, sc across, sc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (1)
- Edge: Sc evenly around all edges with 3 sc at the flap tip.
The body (rows 1–56) folds in half to make the pocket; the triangle is the flap.
Assembly
- Fold Row 1 up to Row 28, right side out.
- Sl st through both layers up each side for a flat, almost invisible seam.
- Sew the magnetic snap under the flap tip and on the front.
- Sew a pearl button, a brooch or a small crochet rose on the flap tip.
- Optional: hand-sew a satin lining inside before adding the snap.
Dressing it up
| Occasion | Yarn idea | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding guest | Champagne or blush metallic | Pearl button |
| Bridesmaid set | Mercerised cotton in the wedding colour | Initial embroidered on the flap |
| Party | Black with silver lurex | Wrist chain on a jump ring |
| Summer | Paper raffia (5 mm hook) | Wooden bead |
Paper raffia also makes a crisp summer clutch: see the raffia bag tips. For a bag with a strap, see the baguette shoulder bag. Add a detachable wrist loop with the wristlet strap.
Common questions
What size is a crochet clutch?
About 9 × 5 inches fits a phone, cards, keys and a lipstick. Add 6 stitches for a larger clutch that holds a small wallet.
What is the best yarn for an evening clutch?
Mercerised cotton for a subtle sheen, or a cotton-metallic blend for sparkle. Both hold a crisp shape.
How do I make the clutch stiffer?
Use a smaller hook, add an interfaced lining, or slip a cut piece of plastic canvas into the back panel.
