A sling bag is a small, slightly curved bag worn diagonally across the chest or back on one wide strap. Unlike a crossbody bag that hangs at the hip, a sling sits high and close to the body, so it's hands-free and secure in crowds. This one is built from two teardrop panels and a gusset, with a zip along the top curve and an adjustable strap.

Panels (make 2)

  1. Row 1: Ch 11. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Ch 1, turn. (10)
  2. Rows 2–9: 2 sc in the first st, sc across, 2 sc in the last st. Ch 1, turn. (26)
  3. Rows 10–28: Sc across. (26)
  4. Rows 29–34: Sc2tog, sc across, sc2tog. (14)
  5. Edge: Sc evenly around the panel, rounding the corners with 2 sc. Fasten off.

The narrow end (Row 1) is the bottom tip of the teardrop; the strap attaches there and at the top.

Gusset

  1. Row 1: Ch 11. Sc in the 2nd ch and across. Ch 1, turn. (10)
  2. Rows 2 onwards: Sc across until the strip reaches around the bottom curve of a panel, from one end of the top edge to the other (about 15 in). (10)

Assembly

  1. Sc the gusset to the curved bottom edge of the first panel, through both layers.
  2. Sc the second panel to the other side of the gusset.
  3. The top edges of the two panels are the opening. Hand-sew the zip in, with a lining if you like.
  4. Strap: Ch 9 and sc 8 per row for about 45 in. Thread one end through a slider and back, then through the D-ring sewn at the bag's top corner, and sew the end to the slider bar. Sew the other end of the strap to the bottom tip of the bag.

Common questions

What is the difference between a sling bag and a crossbody bag?

A sling bag sits high on the chest or back on a wide, single strap; a crossbody hangs lower at the hip. Slings are more secure and hands-free.

How do I make the strap adjustable?

Thread the strap through a slider, then through a D-ring on the bag, and back to the slider. Sliding it shortens or lengthens the strap.

Does a crochet sling bag need a zip?

For a bag worn in crowds, yes. A zip keeps the phone and wallet secure.
