A baguette shoulder bag is long, slim and carried under the arm on a short strap. Here it's built like a tube with a rectangular base: a few rows of single crochet for the base, then rounds of half double crochet worked around it. A zip across the top and a strap with about 9 inches of drop finish it.

For a slouchy, roomier style with a longer strap, see the crochet hobo bag.

Strap and zip

  1. Strap: Ch 6, sc 5 per row for about 22 in. Sl st along both edges so it doesn't stretch.
  2. Attach: Sew each end of the strap inside a short end of the bag, 1 in down.
  3. Zip: Pin a 10-inch zip inside the top edge and backstitch it by hand. If you're lining the bag, sandwich the zip between the crochet and the lining.
  4. Pull: Add a tassel or a daisy charm to the zip pull.

What is a baguette bag?

A small, long, rectangular shoulder bag with a short strap, worn tucked under the arm. It was popular in the late 1990s and is back as a Y2K trend.

How do you get crisp corners on a crochet bag?

Work a rectangular base in rows, then make the first side round in the back loop only. The unworked loops form a sharp edge around the base.

How long should a shoulder bag strap be?

About 20–24 inches for an under-arm baguette bag. For a bag worn lower on the hip, 30–36 inches.
