A crochet phone strap is a narrow single crochet band with a clasp at one end. It clips onto a small tether tab β€” a thin patch with a loop that sits between your phone and its case β€” so it works with almost any phone and case. Three stitches wide is strong enough to carry the phone and slim enough to look neat. A 7-inch wrist loop takes about 30 minutes.

The strap

  1. Row 1: Ch 4. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 2. Ch 1, turn. (3)
  2. Row 2 onwards: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (3)
  3. Length: About 60 rows for a wrist loop (14 in, folded in half to 7 in), or about 200 rows for a 48-inch crossbody strap. Try it on as you go.
  4. Edge: Sl st along both long edges for a firm, non-stretch strap.

Hardware

  1. Wrist loop: Fold the strap in half and stitch both ends through a jump ring together. Attach a lobster clasp to the ring.
  2. Crossbody: Sew a jump ring and clasp to each end, or one clasp and a split ring so it can also hang a keychain.
  3. Tether tab: Put the tab against the back of the phone with the loop out of the charging-port gap, then snap the case on over it. Clip the strap to the loop.

Beaded version

Thread 15–20 beads onto the yarn before you start. Every 4th row, slide a bead up against the hook and work the middle stitch around it so it sits on the right side. Pony beads, letter beads and pearls all work; heavy glass beads can make the strap swing.

Common questions

How do you attach a crochet strap to a phone?

Use a phone strap tether tab: a thin patch with a cord loop that sits between the phone and its case. Clip the strap's lobster clasp to the loop.

Will a crochet phone strap stretch?

Cotton barely stretches. Slip-stitching along both edges locks the length, so a crossbody strap stays the same after months of use.

What yarn is best for a phone strap?

Mercerised cotton in sport or DK weight. It's strong, smooth and keeps its colour.
