To crochet a phone case that fits, base the stitch count on your phone's measurements, not on a pattern's. Measure all the way around the phone (twice the width plus twice the thickness), multiply by your stitches per inch, and take away 10% so the sleeve grips. Start with an oval base of that many stitches and work single crochet rounds until you reach the top of the screen.

For most current phones in worsted cotton on a 4 mm hook, that's 26 stitches for a standard phone and 28 for a Max, Plus or Ultra.

The rest of this post is just below — free, as always.

Find your stitch count

  1. Measure: Phone width + thickness, times 2. An iPhone 16 is 2.82 + 0.31 in, × 2 = 6.3 in.
  2. Gauge: Crochet a 4-inch swatch of single crochet and count stitches per inch. Worsted cotton on 4 mm is usually 4½.
  3. Multiply and reduce: 6.3 × 4.5 = 28, minus 10% = about 26. Round to an even number.
  4. Base chain: Chain half that number. For 26 stitches, ch 13.

The sleeve (26-stitch version)

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 13. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 10, 3 sc in the last ch. Working along the other side of the chain, sc in the next 10, 2 sc in the first ch. Place a marker. (26)
  2. Rnds 2–27: Sc in each st around, working in a continuous spiral. (26)
  3. Check: Slide the phone in after Rnd 10. It should need a gentle push. Too tight? Restart with 2 more stitches. Too loose? Go down a hook size.
  4. Finish: When the sleeve reaches the top of the screen, sl st in the next 2 sts and fasten off.

For 28 stitches, chain 14 and work sc in the next 11 on each side.

Common questions

How many stitches do I need to crochet a phone case?

Measure around the phone (2 × width + 2 × thickness), multiply by your stitches per inch, and take off 10%. In worsted cotton that's about 26 stitches for a standard phone and 28 for a large one.

What is the best yarn for a crochet phone case?

Cotton. It's firm, doesn't stretch out and doesn't shed fluff into the charging port. Avoid fluffy acrylic and chenille for everyday cases.

Does a crochet phone case protect the phone?

It protects against scratches in a bag or pocket, not against drops. Use it as a sleeve over a slim case, or pick a thicker stitch like moss stitch for more padding.
