The simplest crochet laptop sleeve is one long rectangle folded in half with a flap. Make it as wide as the laptop plus half an inch, and twice as long as the laptop is deep plus a 4-inch flap. Seam the two sides and add a button. Moss stitch (single crochet and chain-1 spaces) is the best stitch: dense, padded and stable.

The sleeve (13-inch)

  1. Row 1: Ch 50. Sc in the 4th ch from the hook, *ch 1, skip 1, sc in the next* across. Turn.
  2. Row 2: Ch 2, sc in the first ch-1 space, *ch 1, sc in the next ch-1 space* across, ending with sc in the turning-chain space. Turn.
  3. Rows 3–80: Repeat Row 2. The fabric should measure about 18 in long.
  4. Flap, rows 81–98: Keep repeating Row 2, but skip the first and last ch-1 space every other row so the flap narrows a little toward the end.
  5. Buttonhole: On the last flap row, ch 5 and skip 2 spaces in the centre to make a loop.

Assembly

  1. Fold Row 1 up to Row 80 so the right side faces out.
  2. Sc through both layers up each side, working one sc per row end.
  3. Continue sc around the flap for a neat edge.
  4. Sew the button to the front, under the buttonhole.
  5. Optional: cut fleece to the size of the folded body and whipstitch it inside for extra padding.

Other stitch ideas

For a quicker sleeve, use the waffle stitch (thicker, more padding) or a row of granny squares joined into a strip — 6 squares of 4 inches wrap a 13-inch laptop. Want a smaller device? See the crochet tablet case and Kindle sleeve.

Common questions

What is the best stitch for a crochet laptop sleeve?

Moss stitch (also called linen stitch). It's dense, flat and barely stretches, so the laptop doesn't slide out. Waffle stitch is thicker if you want more padding.

How much yarn do I need for a laptop sleeve?

About 320 yards of worsted cotton for a 13-inch laptop and about 420 yards for 16 inches.

Does a crochet sleeve protect a laptop?

It protects against scratches and light bumps in a bag. For more protection, add a fleece or foam lining.
