Crochet headphone covers are two small oval caps that fit over the outside of each ear cup. You crochet a flat oval the size of the cup, work three straight rounds for the sides, then decrease one round so the edge tucks behind the cup. A drawstring or elastic in the last round holds it on. The covers are decorative — they don't touch the ear cushions, so sound is unchanged.
Decorated headphone covers took off on TikTok with AirPods Max and Sony WH-1000XM headphones; bows, flowers and cat ears are the most popular.

Cover (make 2)
- Rnd 1: Ch 7. Sc in the 2nd ch, sc in the next 4, 3 sc in the last ch. Along the other side, sc 4, 2 sc in the first ch. (14)
- Rnd 2: Inc in the first st, sc 4, inc in the next 3, sc 4, inc in the last 2. (20)
- Rnd 3: (Sc, inc) × 1, sc 4, (sc, inc) × 3, sc 4, (sc, inc) × 2. (26)
- Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) × 1, sc 4, (2 sc, inc) × 3, sc 4, (2 sc, inc) × 2. (32)
- Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) × 1, sc 4, (3 sc, inc) × 3, sc 4, (3 sc, inc) × 2. (38)
- Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) × 1, sc 4, (4 sc, inc) × 3, sc 4, (4 sc, inc) × 2. (44)
- Check: Hold the oval against the ear cup. It should cover the flat outer face. If not, work one more increase round (+6).
- Rnds 7–9: Sc in each st — the sides. (44)
- Rnd 10: (2 sc, dec) × 11. (33)
- Rnd 11: Sl st in each st, working a thin elastic cord into the stitches (or thread a 40-chain drawstring through Rnd 10). Fasten off.
Fit by headphone
| Headphones | Ear cup | Last increase round |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM5 / XM6 | Oval, about 3½ × 2½ in | Rnd 6 (44) |
| Bose QuietComfort | Oval, about 3½ × 2¾ in | Rnd 6 or 7 |
| AirPods Max | Rounded rectangle, about 3½ × 3 in | Rnd 7 (50) |
For Rnd 7, follow the same pattern with (5 sc, inc). Then work the sides with that count and decrease with (3 sc, dec) in Rnd 10.
Decorate
- Bow: a 10 × 4 stitch rectangle cinched in the middle — see the crochet bow.
- Flowers: a cluster of daisies or a single rose.
- Cat or bear ears: sew them to the top of each cover.
Common questions
Do crochet headphone covers affect sound?
No. They cover the outside of the ear cup, not the cushions or the speaker, so sound and noise cancelling are unchanged. Keep the microphone holes on the side uncovered by not working the sides too deep.
Will the covers fall off?
Not with a decrease round and a drawstring or elastic. Acrylic or a blend with a little stretch grips better than pure cotton.
Can I make covers for AirPods Max?
Yes. AirPods Max cups are larger and rounder, so work one more increase round (50 stitches) before the sides.
