A crochet crossbody bag is a flat pouch with a long strap worn across the body. This one is worked in the round from a chain base, so it has no side seams, in moss stitch — single crochet and chain-1 spaces — which is dense, doesn't sag and looks woven. It measures about 9 × 7 inches: room for a phone, wallet, keys and sunglasses.

Need something smaller? The crochet phone bag holds just a phone and cards, and the mini bag is a cute shoulder size. See every style in our crochet bag patterns roundup.

The bag

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 36. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 33, 3 sc in the last ch. Along the other side, sc in the next 33, 2 sc in the first ch. Join with a sl st. (72)
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 1, *sc in the next st, ch 1, skip 1* around. Join to the first sc. (36 sc + 36 ch-1)
  3. Rnd 3: Sl st into the first ch-1 space, ch 1, *sc in the ch-1 space, ch 1, skip the sc* around. Join.
  4. Rnds 4–32: Repeat Rnd 3. The bag should be about 7 in tall.
  5. Rnds 33–34: Sc in each sc and each ch-1 space around. (72)
  6. Rnd 35: Sl st in each st for a firm top edge. Fasten off.

Joining each round (instead of a spiral) keeps the moss pattern straight, and the joins line up at one side.

Strap and closure

Adjustable strapSew a crochet tab with a D-ring to each side; use cotton webbing with a slider

A lining stops small items from poking through and keeps the bag from stretching: see how to line a crochet bag.

Common questions

What is the best stitch for a crochet crossbody bag?

Moss stitch, waffle stitch or tight single crochet. They're dense, so the bag doesn't stretch out or show what's inside.

How long should a crossbody strap be?

About 48–52 inches for most adults, measured from where it attaches on one side to the other. An adjustable strap with a slider fits everyone.

How much yarn do I need for a crochet crossbody bag?

About 220 yards of worsted cotton for the 9 × 7 inch bag and a crochet strap.
