A crochet key fob wristlet is a strap about 12 inches long, folded in half and clamped into a metal key fob end. Make the strap exactly as wide as the hardware — for 1-inch hardware, five single crochet stitches in worsted cotton — so the clamp grips evenly. It takes about 20 minutes and uses scraps.

The strap

  1. Row 1: Ch 6. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Ch 1, turn. (5)
  2. Rows 2–60: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. The strip should be about 12 in long and 1 in wide. (5)
  3. Edges: Sl st along both long edges. This stops stretching and gives a neat finish.

Hardware 1¼ in wide? Use 6 stitches. 1½ in? Use 7.

Fit the hardware

  1. Fold the strap in half and line up the two short ends exactly.
  2. Stitch the ends together with a few whipstitches, or dab with fabric glue, so they act as one thick end.
  3. Push the joined end fully into the key fob clamp.
  4. Cover the clamp with a scrap of fabric (to avoid scratches) and squeeze firmly with pliers, starting in the middle and working out to both sides.
  5. Tug hard on the loop. If it slips, open the clamp, add a dab of glue and clamp again.
  6. Add the split ring and your keys.

Common questions

What size key fob hardware do I need?

1-inch (25 mm) hardware is the most common. Make the crochet strap the same width: about 5 single crochet in worsted cotton.

How long should a key fob wristlet be?

About 12 inches before folding, which makes a 6-inch loop that fits over most hands.

Can I make it without hardware?

Yes. Fold the strap and sew the ends around a split ring with several rows of whipstitch.
