A crochet chapstick holder is a small tube that fits a lip balm stick snugly, with a strap on top to clip it to your keys. In DK cotton on a 3 mm hook, a standard lip balm needs just 10 stitches around: start with a 5-stitch ring, increase once, then work straight rounds. It takes about 15 minutes, which makes it the perfect stocking stuffer or teacher gift.

The holder

  1. Rnd 1: 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (10)
  3. Rnd 3: Sc in the back loop only of each st — a crisp bottom edge. (10)
  4. Rnds 4–12: Sc in each st. Test with the lip balm: the tube should cover it up to the cap. (10)
  5. Rnd 13: Sl st in each st.
  6. Strap: Ch 12, sl st into the stitch directly opposite on the top edge — a handle over the opening. Or ch 10 and sl st into the same st for a single loop. Fasten off.

Thicker balm (like a tinted balm or a jumbo stick)? Use 6 sc in the ring and increase to 12.

Common questions

How many stitches do I need for a chapstick holder?

About 10 single crochet around in DK cotton on a 3 mm hook for a standard lip balm. Use 12 for thicker sticks.

Will the lip balm fall out?

Not if the tube is snug. Cotton grips the plastic; if it's loose, go down a hook size.

Can I use it for other things?

Yes — the same tube holds a small hand sanitiser, a USB stick or a tiny pepper spray if you resize the stitch count.

Which flavour goes in yours? 💋
