A football field blanket is a striped blanket that follows the layout of a field. You work it in rows from one end zone to the other: 12 rows in team colour for the first end zone, then 20 sections of 5 green rows and 1 white row (each section is 5 yards), and the other end zone. Numbers and hash marks are embroidered at the end. It's 40 × 60 inches — a sofa throw for game day.

The blanket

Worked flat in rows of hdc. Ch 2 at the start of each row doesn't count.

  1. Row 1: In team colour A, ch 122. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. Ch 2, turn. (120)
  2. Rows 2–12 (end zone): Hdc across. (120)
  3. Field sections: Change to green and work 5 rows of hdc, then 1 row in white. That's one 5-yard section.
  4. Repeat the section 19 more times, but leave off the white row of the last section — the end zone line comes next. (119 field rows)
  5. Rows 132–143 (end zone): In team colour B (or A again), 12 rows of hdc.
  6. Border: In white, sc around the whole blanket with 3 sc in each corner. Then 1 round of hdc in team colour A.

The 10th white line is the 50-yard line: make it 2 rows of white if you want it to stand out.

Common questions

How do you make yard lines on a crochet football blanket?

Work one row of white after every 5 green rows. Each green-and-white section is 5 yards, so 20 sections make the 100-yard field.

How much yarn does a football field blanket need?

About 2,150 yards of worsted for a 40 × 60 inch throw: mostly green, about 250 yards of white and 200 yards for each end zone.

Can I use team colours for both end zones?

Yes — the same team colour at both ends, or two rival teams for a house divided.
