A crochet mitten ornament is a miniature mitten worked in the round, with a ribbed cuff and a real thumb. The cuff is a short strip of back-loop single crochet joined into a ring; the hand is 14 stitches around with a chain-3 thumb opening. Two mittens on a chain make a pair about 2½ inches long — just big enough to hold a folded gift card or a note.

Common questions

How do you make a thumb on a mini crochet mitten?

Chain 3 and skip 3 stitches on one round to leave a hole. On the next round, work 3 sc into that chain space. Later, join yarn at the hole and work a 6-stitch tube for the thumb.

Can a crochet mitten ornament hold a gift card?

Yes. A standard gift card folded in half fits inside a 2½-inch mitten. For an unfolded card, add 4 stitches to the hand (18) and 3 more rounds.

How do I make the cuff ribbed?

Work rows of single crochet in the back loop only, then join the short ends. The unworked front loops form the ridges.
